As a result of a new partnership with Dr. Courtney Whitney, board certified physician in internal medicine and sleep medicine, and Whitney Sleep Diagnostics & Consultants, patients can now receive diagnosis and treatment for sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, or any of the eighty-four known sleep disorders, at Story County Medical Center.
It is estimated that up to 12 million American adults have obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that causes excessive snoring or interrupted breathing during sleep. Untreated obstructive sleep apnea can increase a person’s risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and work or traffic-related accidents due to daytime fatigue.
“Sleep issues have a huge impact on overall health and are the underlying factor for many conditions,” said Dr. Whitney. “This new partnership demonstrates the commitment Story County Medical Center has to the communities and patients it serves.”
People having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or not waking up refreshed may suffer from a sleep disorder. A simple screening tool, provided by a physician, can help determine if a sleep study is the best course of action for the situation. For more information on sleep studies, patients should contact their local Story Medical Clinic.
